Comparative training needs’ assessment of actors within the Ecological Organic Agriculture value chain in Northern Nigeria Organic Eprints
Yusuf, Olayinka J.; Olowoake, Adebayo A.; Ojo, James A.; Afe, Isaac A..
Inadequate technical know-how, increased demand for labour, costly certification and access to international markets are amongst major constraints faced by practitioners of ecological organic agriculture (EOA) which constitute major restriction for the organic systems in attainment of sustainable agricultural development in developing countries. The current study in a bid to addressing these issues assessed the training needs of EOA practitioners in Northern Nigeria, with a view to identifying core areas where interventions are required. Purposive sampling procedure was used in selecting one state from each of the three (3) zones in Northern Nigeria, viz; Yobe state in North-east, Kebbi state in North-west and Niger state in North-central because these...

Feeding toasted field beans to dairy cows Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, K.F.; Kjeldsen, A.M.; Askegaard, M..
Toasting field beans can improve the protein quality of field beans markedly. In the feed demonstrations carried out in Project EcoProtein testing a new method of toasting with a drum dryer, showed, however, only reduced effect on the protein quality due to a lower than optimal temperature. The toasted field beans were fed in two organic dairy herds, replacing a part of the concentrates in the ration in a cross-over design. Preliminary results showed no milk yield difference in herd 1, but a reduced milk yield level in herd 2.

Regionale Bio-Lebensmittel - Bewertung der sozio-ökonomischen Vorteile für die Region aus Sicht der Nachhaltigkeit am Beispiel Frischmilch in Österreich Organic Eprints
Markut , Theresia; Gusenbauer, Isabella; Bartel-Kratochvil, Ruth; Hörtenhuber, Stefan; Lindenthal, Thomas.

Improvement in soil nutrient status and beneficial microbial populations using compost, plant juice and home-made fertiliser preparations Organic Eprints
Aini, Z.; Zulkefli, M.; Krishnen, G..
Natural farming (NF) techniques use farm inputs such as indigenous microbes (IMO), composts, fermented fruit and plant juices, fish amino acids and other home made fertiliser preparations in managing the soil fertility. Experiments were carried out on farmers’ plots at two different sites, Air Kuning and Serdang to quantify the effectiveness of the technique using long beans (Vigna sesquipedalis) as the test crop. Soil qualities such as the carbon content, total nitrogen and cation exchange capacity especially that of calcium, increased significantly after planting in the NF plots compared to the conventional farming (CF) plots. A higher number of beneficial microbes such as Azotobacter, Azospirillum, Actinomycete, Lactobacillus, was obtained during...

Schneider, Regina; Heiles, Eberhard; Salzeder , Georg; Wiesinger, Klaus; Schmidt, Martin; Urbatzka, Peer.

Screening of micro-organisms for Venturia inaequalis control by means of DGGE Organic Eprints
Speksnijder, Arjen; Lombaers- van der Plas, Carin; Köhl, Jürgen.
Venturia inaequalis causes apple scab. The control of the disease in organic apple production depends on the use of copper which will be restricted in future for environmental reasons. In the search for environmental friendly microbial biocontrol agents and stimulation of antagonistic populations in situ the molecular technique of DGGE fingerprinting can is applied. This fingerprinting technique allows to bypass culturing techniques and even can identify not yet culturable organisms. Comparison of microbial fingerprints and pathogen development in the leaf samples during winter and spring has been performed to identify populations with antagonistic potential. Such potential antagonistic organisms can be further identified by their specific DNA...

Ökologischer Landbau in der beruflichen Bildung - Status Quo, Bedarfe und Ideen Organic Eprints
Beringer, Jutta.

Ivemeyer, Silvia; Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Simantke, Christel; Winckler, Christoph; Knierim, Ute.
Organic dairy milk production is a growing sector in Germany. The sector varies between regions and individual farms due to topographical and structural differences, but very little statistical information is available in Germany about this variation. The aim of this study was to identify typical major farm types (MFT) of German organic dairy farms and to describe their farm, herd and management characteristics. Based on data from 204 organic dairy farms from previous studies with representative samples, four MFT were identified by cluster analysis and expert opinions. Cluster criteria were herd size, milk yield, region and housing system. 10-11 farms per MFT, in total 41 farms were interviewed with respect to their management by phone or during a farm...

School food provision in Germany. A first analysis of the role of organic produce Organic Eprints
Strassner, Carola; Nölting, Benjamin; Reimann, Silke.
School meal provision in Germany is changing from a type of supplementary food provision towards full warm school meals. Reasons for this transition are longer school days, the expansion of the all-day school model, and an increasing interest in a healthy nutrition for children and young people. However, the organisation of school meal systems is patchy and confusing; there is an enormous range of services in various qualities. This paper describes the current situation and explores chances for sustainable school meal systems emerging out of this change. The focus is on the use of organic food in school meals.

Farm Auditing for Sustainability Organic Eprints
Measures, Mark.
Policy makers have now established sustainability as the new aim for UK farming. The development of the Farm Audit for Sustainability involved identifying the objectives of sustainable farming, based on the Principles of organic farming as set out by the International Federation of Organic Farming Movements (IFOAM) and establishment of indicators to assess the effectiveness of individual farms in meeting these objectives. On-farm use of the Farm Audit demonstrated that the tool was able to provide a comprehensive assessment of sustainability of the farming system and that it is an information and advisory tool which is potentially useful in benchmarking and development of the farming operation.

Are the motives of recent adopters in line with the conventionalisation hypothesis? Organic Eprints
Best, Henning.
To contribute to the discussion on the con-ventionalisation hypothesis, empirical data on mo-tives for the conversion to organic farming by recent adopters is analysed. The results indicate that the preferences and attitudes of the new organic farmers contradict the conventionalisation scenario: (1) Com-pared to conventional farmers, the new adopters have lower preferences for high yields, market prices and easy control of weed and pests, but higher prefer-ences for receiving subsidies and not using chemicals. (2) Environmental concern has an effect on the odds of an adoption of organic farming. Thus, new organic farmers significantly differ in their preferences and attitudes from conventional farmers – they hold a less productivist, relatively alternative...

Feeding sainfoin to goats – influence on milk and cheese quality and yield Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Schwery, Moritz; Volken, Herbert; Maurer, Veronika; Simonnet, Xavier.
Although the administration of sainfoin is associated with anthelmintic effects, information on the consequences of feeding this legume on product quality is scarce. In the present study we looked at milk quality and yield of goats fed either sainfoin or a non-tanniferous control forage. Twelve lactating goats of the alpine breed were used for the study. They received grass/clover hay for a period of 15 days (grass clover feeding period, GCFP). Then the feed was switched to sainfoin hay (approx. 90 % of daily intake) for another 15 days (sainfoin feeding period, SFP). Both feeds were supplemented with concentrates in order to guarantee isoproteic and isoenergetic feeding throughout the trial. Milk yield and quality (fat, protein, energy and urea) were...

Ökonomische Bewertung der Integration temporärer Naturschutzmaßnahmen im Ökologischen Landbau - Beispiel Blühstreifen - Organic Eprints
Behrens, Martina; Moeller, Prof. Dr. Detlef; Haase, Dr. Thorsten; Hess, Prof. Dr. Juergen.
At the Hessian state domain Frankenhausen, an organic farm with comparatively high yield potential, the integration of nature conservation measures is tested. Economic investigations aim to identify costs and changes of performance due to the adaptation of production processes to nature conservation targets. The main focus is on temporary measures that, like field-flower strips, potentially promote biodiversity on arable land. Initial calculations show the costs that must be taken into account for wildflower strips with autochthonous species on arable land. The analysis particularly considers the complex intra-farm integration of the conservation measures as a special characteristic of organic agriculture systems.

Environmental targets and shadow prices of bad outputs in organic and conventional farming Organic Eprints
Huhtala, Anni; Marklund, Per-Olov.
The shadow prices can be used as indicators of the costs of environmental regulation imposed as reflected in alternative farming technologies adopted. We illustrate our analytical findings with implications of the Finnish water protection policy measures on conventional and organic livestock farms over the period 1994-2002. Generally, the representative organic farm is found to be more technically efficient relative to its own technology than is the conventional representative farm. However, there is no statistical indication of a difference between these two particular representative farms in valuing the costs of undesirable output (manure) at the margin.

"Economic results achieved by a selected group of organic farms in Poland in 2004" Organic Eprints
Nachtman, Grażyna; Żekało, Marcin.
Abstract: Organic farming is becoming more and more popular among Polish farmers. In the year of the accession of Poland to the European Union, the number of certified organic farms amounted to 1683. By the end of 2005, which is after the first year of Poland’s membership in the EU, the number of farms practicing exclusively organic farming or taking up that course of production amounted to more than 7000. On the basis of agricultural accountancy from 2004, an economic and production evaluation of 110 organic farms included in the Polish FADN sample was carried out. The organic farms were classified into 5 classes of economic size. 92% of them were of economic size below 16 ESU. The study contains economic and production results achieved by a group of...

Cultivating multi-cultural teams: lessons learned in the "milpa" of an Agroecology MSc course Organic Eprints
Morse, Suzanne R.; Lieblein, Geir; Breland, Tor Arvid; Francis, Charles; Nicolaysen, Anna Marie.
Traditional milpa polycultures of maize-bean-squash consistently have higher yields and are more resilient to stresses than monocultures. This synergistic outcome builds on species differences in physiology and morphology. In our agroecology program, the faculty work as milperos, intentionally developing multi-cultural teams that are capable of building upon their differences.

Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Höller, Barbara; Winckler, Christoph.
Mastitis is one of the most important diseases in organic dairy farming. Therefore, it was the aim of this study to investigate the influence of stage of lactation and parity on mastitis risk in organic dairy cows. 43 German organic farms with German Holstein cows were selected via a questionnaire. These farms are being visited approximately every three months since 2005. Minimum herd size is 30 cows, and annual milk yield averages 6,277 kg/cow (min=3,175; max=9,653). During the farm visits, mastitis cases and treatments were extracted from farm records and data were processed using InterHerd©. The mean mastitis (treatment) incidence was 22 cases/100 cow years, which is comparable to incidences in organic farms reported elsewhere. 19 mastitis cases/100 cow...
